  • Emmanuel College, Vazhichal

Education, undoubtedly, is the basis of any sustainable development. It is this realization that urged a few daring young priests to think of the possibility of establishing an institution of higher learning. This indeed was a God given idea as it flashed through a few young minds during the annual retreat of priests at the Jubilee Memorial Animation Centre, Vellayambalam in the year 1989.

"We could not think of such a thing when we were young. Your idea seems to be good. If you think it’s possible go ahead". The Great Grand Pappa Msgr. S. Thomas opened his mind. The few encouraging words of approval thrilled the young minds. Bringing together the priests, especially the veterans, who wished to linger in their own little circles asserting individuality and authority was a wild dream to many. The invitation of the young ones was warmly welcomed. The first meeting took place in the parochial house at Vazhichal. It was followed by a series of consultations at various levels.

The required land was acquired through the generous sharing of priests and the valuable contributions of the laity. Though there were some suspicions and resistance in certain circles Most Rev. Dr. Soosa Pakiam decided to take a stand to support this daring venture. He did remain steadfast in his decision.

In 1995 the Government of Kerala sanctioned the College. It is affiliated to the University of Kerala.
At Present, besides B.Sc. Computer Science, B.Sc. Electronic and B.Com with Electronics Data Processing and Computer Application, the college offers B.Sc. Biochemistry and M.Sc Biochemistry. There are well-equipped labs with the latest facilities for electronics, Computer Science and Biochemistry. There is also a spacious library with adequate books.

Salesian sisters run a well-disciplined Girls' Hostel, in the campus. Recognizing the committed service in the field of education the Government of Kerala has now sanctioned a B.Ed. Training College at Vazhichal. Emmanuel College of B.Ed. Training will be started in a four storeyed building which is already well equipped and furnished for B.Ed. Training. The diocese of Neyyattinkara manages the college through Catholic Education and Charitable Society.

The College is situated on a hill top at Vazhichal about 35 km east of Trivandrum city amid thick lush green plantations and deep fertile valleys surrounded by endless mountain ranges on one side and imposing gigantic granite rocks across the valleys on the other. This beautiful and serene atmosphere is most suitable for any intellectual activity and academic pursuits.
